The easiest way to get to the Laguna del Cumbal is first by getting to the city of Pasto. You can get there by land by bus or by air to Antonio Nariño airport in Pasto. Once in Pasto, head to the transport terminal and take a bus to Cumbal.
From Pasto (capital of Nariño): Take a bus or a collective to Cumbal (approximately 2.5 hours). There are frequent services from the Pasto transport terminal from 40,000 COP
Once in the town of Cumbal, head to the market square and there take a small van that goes to Laguna del Cumbal for 20,000 COP. The walk from the nearest access points can take between 30 minutes and 2 hours, depending on your physical condition and the path you choose, you can also hire a guide that costs $100,000 COP (per group).
From Ecuador (Tulcán): If you are in Tulcán, Ecuador, the border crossing at the Rumichaca international bridge is quick. From Ipiales, you are only 30-40 minutes from Cumbal by bus or taxi.
Although the municipality of Cumbal is small, you can find comfortable and cozy options to spend the night:
Local lodgings: Many of them offer simple, but clean and cozy rooms. Some have additional services such as meals with typical dishes. Remember to bring cash.
Tip: Book in advance especially if you plan to visit during the high season (such as Easter or holidays).
