If you are in Ipiales and want to continue with your adventure, you cannot miss the Tulcán Cemetery in Ecuador. The Tulcán Cemetery, in Ecuador, is a place that combines art, history, and nature in such a unique way that you will not want to miss this experience.
The Tulcán Cemetery is located in the city of Tulcán, which is the capital of the province of Carchi, in the north of Ecuador. It is very close to the border with Colombia, so it is a point of interest for both locals and tourists crossing from the neighboring country.
From Colombia (Ipiales or Pasto): If you are in Ipiales (Colombia), take a taxi or bus to the Rumichaca International Bridge. Then, cross the border and take local transportation to Tulcán (the journey takes less than 30 minutes). It is also possible to walk from the border bridge to downtown Tulcán, although it may be more comfortable to use local transportation.
Once you cross the bridge, it's time to exchange your money for dollars. We exchanged $50,000 COP and had enough to go and return; we even had enough to have lunch in Ecuador.
From Quito: Take a bus from the Carcelén Land Terminal in Quito to Tulcán.
Entrance to the cemetery is free. When you want to return to Ipiales, head to Ayora Park, which is approximately 3 blocks from the cemetery. From here, taxis leave for the border with Colombia. You can wait for the quota to be filled or pay for the full fare
Tip: Be sure to carry your passport or identification document if you cross the border.
The Tulcán Cemetery was inaugurated in 1932, but what really makes it special is the artwork that adorns the place. The creator of these living sculptures was José María Azael Franco, a local gardener and artist who dedicated much of his life to transforming simple cypresses into impressive figures. Currently, his heirs continue his legacy, taking care of and renewing these masterpieces.
From religious and mythological figures to geometric and cultural designs, the cemetery is a reflection of Ecuadorian creativity and tradition. It was declared a Cultural Heritage in 1984, and it's not hard to understand why.
Marvel at the cypress sculptures: The highlight is, without a doubt, the cypress sculptures. There are over 300 figures that include arches, animals, human faces, and religious symbols. Each sculpture tells a story and is ideal for art and photography lovers.
Take a guided tour: If you want to learn more about the sculptures and their symbolism, you can hire a local guide. Many offer tours at affordable prices and tell you curiosities that you might otherwise overlook.
Enjoy the tranquility of the place: Although it is a cemetery, the atmosphere is calm and even relaxing. It is a good place to meditate, read a book, or simply walk among the sculptures.
Go early: This way you will avoid crowds and be able to take better photos.
Wear comfortable shoes: You will walk a lot, and some paths are dirt or cobblestone.
Bring water and sunscreen: Tulcán is 2,980 meters above sea level, and the sun can be intense even on cold days.
Respect the place: Remember that it is an active cemetery, so maintain appropriate behavior.
Check restrictions: Some areas may be temporarily closed for maintenance.
Best Time to Visit: The spring and summer months are ideal for visiting, when the sculptures are in their best shape, but thanks to the care of the place, you can visit at any time.
Is it suitable to visit with children?: Of course! Children usually enjoy seeing the sculptures and learning about their meaning. Just make sure to explain to them that it is a solemn place and they should behave respectfully.
Can I bring pets?: Pets are not allowed to enter. However, you can look for nearby care options if you are traveling with your furry friend.
What is the best time to visit?: Any time of the year is good, but the dry months (from June to September) are usually more comfortable for outdoor walks.
