During the colonial period, the Customs House was the operations center for managing goods coming in and out of the region, playing a key role in the city's history. Today, the museum preserves an impressive collection that connects the visitor with the legacy of the indigenous cultures of the region.
In 2005, the historic Customs House of Santa Marta was restored and transformed into the Tairona Gold Museum, a project of the Banco de la República. Its mission is to preserve and disseminate the legacy of indigenous cultures, especially the Taironas, who inhabited the Sierra Nevada.
The museum houses more than 600 gold pieces, including jewelry, ornaments, and ritual objects, highlighting the impressive skill of the Taironas in goldsmithing. These treasures, found in local tombs, not only had ornamental value, but also represented symbols of their religious beliefs.
