For a long time, Guatapé was a quiet place famous for its agriculture and livestock. But everything changed in the 70s when they started to build the Guatapé Dam, a large project to generate electricity.

This dam meant that much of the old town of El Peñol was left underwater, and people had to move nearby. It was a difficult change, but the inhabitants of Guatapé proved to be strong and love their land! They remade the town and decorated it with the famous "zócalos". Now, Guatapé is an amazing tourist place that attracts people from all over with its exciting history and special charm
